The subjunctive mood is the form a verb takes when it reflects uncertainty or subjectivity. In Spanish it is used when a sentence gives information that is important to the way we perceive an action. If an action is improbable, coerced, conditional or emotion-provoking it is described by a subjunctive verb. Some of ways in which the Spanish subjunctive is used are explained below.
Likelihood of action
When someone expresses an opinion about how likely an action is, the verb referring to the action will be in the subjunctive. If a sentence starts with ‘es dudoso’ (it is doubtful) or ‘es probable’ (it is probable), a subjunctive verb will always appear in the following clause.
Influence
The subjunctive is used in sentences where someone influences another person to do something. When the action described by the verb is in response to someone’s advice, command, or desire, it takes the subjunctive form. If a sentence includes the verb ‘decir’ (to tell someone to do something), the verb that describes what they were told to do will be in the subjunctive.
Judgement
When a person expresses an emotional response to an action, the action verb will be subjunctive. If a sentence starts off with a phrase such as ‘es bueno que’ (it is good that) or ‘es terrible’ (it is terrible), the speaker is making a value judgement so the verb in the clause that follows will be in the subjunctive form.
Conditional Events
If an action may or may not occur depending on something else happening, it is conditional. Verbs describing conditional events take the subjective. Sentences containing ‘con tal’ (provided) and ‘tan pronto como’ (as soon as) will include subjunctive verbs.
The subjunctive mood is used in most instances where the speaker is not making a purely objective statement. If a sentence makes a value judgement about an action or introduces doubt about whether an action will take place, it will usually include a subjunctive verb.

They say that the best time to learn languages is from the age of around six months. Research has shown that all children at this age can communicate and this is where language emerges. As adults, this process can be more difficult. Learning Spanish phrases is often as much about finding a way to learn that suits your own individual needs.
There are numerous reasons why you would want to learn a foreign language. It is culturally naive to assume that somebody speaks English. There can be times when it is important. For example you may want to alert the police or call for an ambulance and this when time is of the essence.
A good place to start is to look up Spanish phrases into a search engine online. This is where you can often find a simple table of simple sentences such as saying what your name is or asking if somebody speaks English. Ideally they should also have phonetic spelling to help you if pronunciation.
With some websites they will show you the phrase and then give you an audio clip of a native speaker saying that sentence. This gives you an idea of how the words sound and over time you will learn to approximate that accent. It can sometimes be intimidating when you see a sentence with upside down question marks and it can take some getting used to.
There are various methods of learning how to use these phrases in the right context and pronounce them with confidence. Many people find tape or CD based language tapes useful. Some sites offer exercises and games that make the learning process more fun.
Whatever method you choose it is worth looking online to see what is available to you. Over time you will find the best methods that fit into your own personal routine. For more information look up Spanish phrases in an internet search engine.

Spanish is one of the major world languages. It is not only spoken in Spain, but with the exception of Brazil, right across Central and South America. If you plan to visit one of these countries, you should invest in Spanish lessons for beginners. Let’s briefly look at what such a course should entail.
Firstly, don’t go for lessons that will attempt to teach you everything about tenses and verb forms in Spanish. This can become very complicated and isn’t necessary for a visit of a few days or even weeks. Basic vocabulary and some general phrases are much more important.
Such lessons should therefore be very much hands on. It should start off by explaining to you how the vowels and consonants are pronounced in Spanish. Fortunately an ‘a’ is always pronounced the same way in Spanish. It’s not like English where the context can make a huge difference to the way in which the vowel is pronounced. The same goes for e, i, o and u. Once you know how it’s pronounced in Spanish, you can read any Spanish word and pronounce it correctly.
Secondly you will need to learn phrases that will help you to book accommodation. Knowing a simple phrase like ‘do you have a double room available?” will make a huge difference to your ability to make your own way through a Spanish-speaking country. Similarly, knowing how to ask ‘is breakfast included in the price?” will no doubt safe you a lot of money in the end.
The second area where learning the correct phrases is very important, is making reservations and buying tickets for planes, trains and buses. Without knowing how to buy a bus ticket to the next city or making a train reservation to an important tourist destination, you are going to struggle a lot with independent traveling.
Last, but of course not least, there are two very important words you should learn to say in Spanish. The same two words that you were probably taught by your mother just after you could say ‘Mommy’. They are ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. You will be amazed how far these two words will bring you in a foreign country. And don’t be afraid to try your broken Spanish on the locals: you will find that people truly appreciate it that you are trying to master their language.
