While learning Spanish, there are some words, sentences and phrases that would be great to know first. Spanish numbers will come in handy when you are asking directions, such as asking how many blocks away a store or other building is. It will also allow you to understand certain amounts, and the time of day or night.

There are other parts of the language that would be smart to learn first, as well. Certain sentences and questions that are used frequently would be wise to know, so that you would not need to look them up for simple conversation. Such sentences might be, “I need a doctor”, or “Where is the bathroom?”. “Thank you” and “please” will also come in handy several times per day.

When getting directions, you should know how to say “Where is the …”, and then fill in the blank, such as “Donde esta el bano?” means “Where is the bathroom?” But you will also need to be ready to listen to the answer. When you ask any type of directions, you will need to know the Spanish words for “left”, “right”, “down the street”, “up”, “down”, “across the road”, and so on. There may also be a number of streets involved in an answer, such as, “he market is three blocks away”.

When you are asking what time it is, or what time something starts, you will need to be ready for the answer. It will be given in time increments, such as “dos y media”, which means two thirty, and you should know these by heart.

When asking how old someone is, or how long they have lived in the village, the answer will be in numbers. When purchasing groceries, especially produce, you may ask for a certain amount of bananas or mangoes. You will want to get this right in order to purchase the right amount.

Knowing the words for the Spanish numbers will make your conversation with Spanish-speaking people easier. And it will make your visit to their countries easier for yourself, as well.
