For many people learning Spanish, the ability to have a conversation in Spanish can be a hugely satisfying part of mastering the language. Often this is not easy as your self conciousness takes over and you stop yourself from speaking as you are scared of sounding foolish. You know deep down that you need to get through the confidence block so that you can speak Spanish more, and use this as another way to quickly study and consolodate the language. Your pronunciation will get better, which will help boost your confidence further, so that you can begin to recognise sentence patterns, colloquialisms and slang words, most of which you won’t be taught in formal lessons.
Sounds excellent, but what are the best ways for you to overcome the problem of sounding silly? Follow one of the methods below and you’ll experience your Spanish speaking confidence improving.

Spanish conversation groups
One of the most effective techniques to start to speak Spanish with improved confidence is via others who are also wanting to speak the language. The best way to approach this is to meet other Spanish students in a cafe or someone’s house, so that you can keep the meeting easy going as you’ll learn better when you are relaxed. What you talk about isn’t the key here but sharing this experience with other learners who are in a similar position can really help calm the nervousness linked to conversing in Spanish. Search for local Spanish practice groups on the internet, or set up a group yourself if you have trouble finding an existing one.
Intercambios
An intercambio is one more brilliant technique to improve your confidence in talking Spanish. Intercambios are arranged with people just like you but who are mother tongue Spanish speakers and who would like to improve their English. You arrange to meet up and speak for around half of the time in English, so that the other person can improve, and for some of the time in Spanish so that you have the chance to practice. The advantage here is that this can all be carried out through an internet video chat service like Skype. If you want to improve your writing and reading skills as well as your speaking skills, then you could easily send emails to each other between your internet meetings. There are a lot of websites that have a search for intercambios and a quick internet search will enable you to find them.

Immersion and exchange programs
If you have a little time to spare then a brilliant way to improve your Spanish oral skills is via an immersion program. You are able to stay with a Spanish speaking family in Latin America or Spain, most often by organising your language exchange through a specialist company. You pay not much more than your aifare and you get your accommodation and food provided by the family, you get to learn Spanish with the family; in return you help the family learn English. Living with your host family in a Spanish speaking part of the world literally ‘immerses’ you in the Spanish language and you find you have little choice but to speak the language. You really do improve in Spanish more effectively using this method.
For all of these tips, the thing to keep in mind is that mistakes aren’t bad – they are actually helping you to learn. If you aren’t sure exactly how to express something then try to speak in Spanish anyway, remember any corrections and move on – remember we usually learn more effectively from our mistakes. Don’t forget that you’ll be better at the language and will be less self-concious if you make your language learning fun, and you’ll want to practice it more. There’s no danger in trying to talk in Spanish – and most people are pleasantly shocked by how much they actually know!
